Customer Acquisition Calculator
Know What You Can Afford to Spend to Win Your Next Customer.
More leads don’t necessarily mean more profit. Understand what acquiring a customer actually costs, how many customers your advertising needs to generate and whether the numbers make commercial sense.
Your assumptions
All amounts are in AUD. The prefilled figures are illustrative examples, not benchmarks or Growthrex results. Replace them with your own numbers.

Expected customer counts can be fractional. They represent estimates across the model, not guaranteed individual customers. N/A means a required assumption is missing or a calculation is undefined.
Revenue is the starting point. Contribution tells you what’s left.
A customer acquisition cost calculator connects your advertising assumptions to the sales they could produce. Use the cost per lead and conversion rate together: cheap enquiries alone do not establish a profitable campaign.
How to calculate customer acquisition cost
Divide total acquisition expenditure by the new customers acquired. Here, total expenditure is your monthly advertising budget plus entered marketing management costs. Estimated new customers are leads multiplied by your lead-to-customer conversion rate.
Leads = advertising budget ÷ CPL
Customers = leads × conversion rate
All-in CAC = (advertising budget + management costs) ÷ customers
Gross profit and contribution
Gross profit is estimated revenue multiplied by your gross profit margin. Your margin should already reflect direct costs of providing the service. Contribution subtracts the advertising and management expenses from that gross profit. It is the amount left to help cover overheads, tax and profit, not net business profit.
Your break-even cost per lead
This is the advertising CPL at which estimated gross profit would cover the entered acquisition expenditure. It accounts for management costs, so adding fees lowers the CPL you can afford at the same advertising budget. The calculation requires a positive advertising budget.
Gross profit per customer = customer revenue × margin
Break-even CPL = advertising budget × conversion rate × gross profit per customer ÷ (advertising budget + management costs)
For the illustrative A$3,000 budget, A$50 CPL, 20% conversion rate, A$5,000 customer revenue, 40% margin and A$1,000 management costs, estimated customers are 12, all-in CAC is A$333.33 and break-even CPL is A$300. The estimated contribution is A$20,000 before overheads and tax. These are model outputs, not typical results.
Using this as a marketing ROI calculator
Compare gross profit with the full acquisition investment to assess the scenario. Revenue divided by advertising spend is ROAS, not profit or marketing ROI. This tool shows contribution rather than labelling revenue as a return you can keep.
Facebook advertising cost per customer
For Facebook and Instagram campaigns, use the platform’s advertising spend and a measured CPL, then enter your verified sales conversion rate. Match sales to the lead cohort that generated them. This helps distinguish platform-reported leads from paying customers.
What the estimate leaves out
Results depend on user-entered assumptions. Real-world sales timing, attribution, refunds, overheads and customer lifetime value may change the outcome. The monthly model assumes the estimated leads eventually convert at the entered rate; it does not guarantee that sales or cash arrive in that month. Sales team costs, software and other acquisition expenses are excluded unless incorporated into the optional costs you enter. Use consistent revenue and cost figures, including a consistent treatment of GST.
Know what the numbers mean.
What is customer acquisition cost?
Customer acquisition cost (CAC) is acquisition expenditure divided by the number of new customers acquired. This calculator includes your advertising budget and entered management costs. A full business CAC can also include sales salaries, commissions, tools and other acquisition costs. Add those separately when assessing your complete economics.
How do you calculate cost per lead?
Divide advertising spend by the number of leads generated in the same period. For example, A$3,000 spent generating 60 leads gives a CPL of A$50. This calculator takes your average CPL as an assumption and estimates the leads your budget could generate.
What’s the difference between CPL and CAC?
CPL measures the advertising cost of an enquiry. CAC measures the cost of winning a paying customer. If CPL is A$50 and 20% of leads become customers, advertising-only CAC is A$250. Management costs increase all-in CAC.
How much should I spend to acquire a customer?
Start with the gross profit from a customer and decide how much must remain for overheads, risk and profit. Spending all that gross profit on acquisition leaves no contribution for those needs. Repeat purchases and lifetime value may support a different target, but use verified retention and cash-flow information rather than assuming future sales.
Why does lead-to-customer conversion rate matter?
Conversion rate connects enquiries to paying customers. At the same CPL, a lower conversion rate means fewer customers and higher CAC. Use completed sales from a comparable lead cohort and allow enough time for those leads to convert.
How can I reduce my customer acquisition costs?
Review which campaigns generate relevant enquiries, how clearly your offer is presented and how quickly your team follows up. Test creative, landing pages and qualification, then measure confirmed sales. Lower CPL is useful only if lead quality and sales conversion hold up.
